On September 13, 2007 the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Declaration outlines the individual and collective rights of indigeneous people, prohibits discrimination against them and promotes their participation in decision-making in matters that concern them. Among the rights set out in the Declaration are their rights to maintain and sthrenghten their own institutions, to live in peace and security, to self-determination, identity, culture, language, employment, health and education. The Declaration is a nonbinding document.
