Milan police arrested two Moroccan-born men on charges of plotting attacks against Italian targets. These targets included a supermarket, police barracks, and Milan’s Piazza del Duomo. The two men were said to have no ties to international terrorist groups, but did admire the work of such groups as Al Qaeda.

In response to recent political and legal developments and the most recent wave of racism and xenophobia against Roma in Italy, between 23 and 30 May 2008 a coalition of organisations undertook first-hand human rights documentation in Italy. The Coalition conducted interviews with approximately 100 Romani individuals living in formal and informal Romani camps in Rome, Naples, Florence, Brescia, Milan and Torino.

Members of Italy’s Muslim community met on Friday to find new ways to combat extremism. The meeting, held in Rome’s main mosque, was the first of its kind to be organized by the Association of Muslim Intellectuals. "We placed attention on the need to implement strategies to prevent Islamic radicalism and foster initiatives that aim to create a more accurate image of Islam," said in a statement by the group.

One of the hijackers of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro has been released, after serving more than two decades in an Italian jail. Ibrahim Fatayer Abdelatif was one of a group of Palestinian militants who hijacked the ship in 1985. Authorities have ordered Ibrahim to leave Italy, though his lawyer says that he has nowhere to go. Although Ibrahim has officially been expelled from Italy, he cannot leave until he finds another country that will accept him.

Magdi Allam, a Christian convert to Islam who has been targeted with death threats over apostasy, has expressed concern about these dangers and the fear that the perpetrators may be Italian. Allam’s fears were expressed concerning the large number of al-Qaeda inspired websites popping up on the internet, and the belief that some websites are created and maintained by Italians.

Members of the Islamic community in Naples and surrounding areas are planning to protest newly proposed security measures. The package could make illegal immigration a crime and replace police officers with security personnel to patrol the streets - including soldiers.

Italy’s police arrested hundreds of illegal immigrants last week in a sweep of migrant shantytowns in major Italian urban areas across the country. Nearly 400 people were arrested, and 100 were immediately expelled - most of who were Moroccans and Romanians who violated immigration laws, were involved in theft and prostitution, or drug dealing.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Italy would violate its obligations under the European Convention of Human rights if it deports Nassim Saadi, a Tunisian terror suspect from Italy, citing the very real risk of torture if he were to return to his home country. Human rights group Amnesty International applauded the ruling, as a «landmark» ruling on the absolute prohibition of torture, inhuman, and otherwise degrading treatment.

This pilot study on migrants’ experiences of discrimination is based on country studies conducted between 2002 and 2005 in Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and UK. According to the study in all these countries migrants subjectively experience discriminatory practices to a significant extent.

Yesterday, the government of Tripoli announced with a press release (by Jana) that « all illegal immigrants » staying in the Libyan territory will be expelled « without exception ». According to the last estimate of Libyan authorities, they are two million people. Among these many asylum seekers and refugees, women and children, coming mostly from the Horn of Africa.

A new poll shows that half of Italians believe that Islamic extremism is growing in their country and over 50% believe it to be an increasing worldwide threat. Most Italians believe that immigrants do not want to integrate, while less than one third blame the lack of Italian integrative infrastructure.
