Europol, the European Police Office responsible for coordinating the fight against serious and organised crime, began operations from its headquarters in The Hague in 1999. In January 2010 it will become an agency of the EU. The Council Decision bringing about this change in its constitution has made some amendments to its objects, powers, working methods and governance.

According to a report published by Eurostat, based on the results of the 2007 Labour Force Survey, in the EU27 between 2000 and 2007 employment rates both for men and women increased and the gender gap in employment decreased. Both in 2000 and in 2007 in all Member States the employment rate for men was higher than for women. Between 2000 and 2007 the gender gap in employment decreased in nineteen Member states and increased in eight Member States.

Financial exclusion is very much linked to social exclusion.

The Global Approach to migration can be defined as the external dimension of the European Union’s migration policy. It is based on genuine partnership with third countries, is fully integrated into the EU’s other external policies, and addresses all migration and asylum issues in a comprehensive and balanced manner. Adopted in 2005, it illustrates the ambition of the European Union to establish an inter-sectoral framework to manage migration in a coherent way through political dialogue and close practical cooperation with third countries.
